Harold K. Johnson
Chief of Staff, U.S. Army (1964-1968)
Johnson lived out the 4 I’s that he emphasized for officers: intelligence, imagination, initiative, and integrity. He survived the Bataan Death March and was a POW for 3 years. It was told he exchanged his West Point class ring with a guard for a tin of salmon to give to another prisoner. He made an indelible difference for both Soldiers & families, in part by establishing Army Community Service in 1965 and creating the position of sergeant major of the Army in 1967.
