Henry Johnson served in the 369th Infantry Regiment, known as the ‘Harlem Hellfighters.’ In the Argonne Forest of France, Johnson and fellow Soldier, Needham Roberts, were on sentry duty for the French Army when German snipers began firing on them. Johnson would suffer 21 wounds yet still rescue Roberts from becoming a POW while using only his bolo knife after running out of grenades and jamming his rifle.
He received France’s Croix du Guerre with a Gold Palm for extraordinary valor.
