Elizabeth Schenck Smith
Family Member, U.S. Army
As an Army daughter and spouse, Mrs. Smith devoted her life to Army community issues of her day. She lobbied for reforms that enabled military wives that resided on Fort Leavenworth to vote and organized meetings to address issues such as child labor and public protection of mothers & children. These activities were the forerunners of the Fort Leavenworth Spouse’s Club and the Fort Leavenworth Parent-Teachers Association (the first in Kansas). During WWII, Ms. Smith hand-copied books in Braille, two of which are at the Library of Congress.
