He’s been described as “the man who saved Korea” and “the best fighting U.S. general we hardly talk about.” Ultimately becoming a master of operational art, he understood the high stakes of war and carefully considered every decision. To him, leadership consisted of character, courage, and competence. He described character (self-discipline, loyalty, selflessness, modesty, and willingness to accept responsibility and admit mistakes) as the "bedrock on which the whole edifice of leadership rests."
