Sylvanus Thayer

As superintendent, Thayer thoroughly modernized West Point between 1817-1833. Setting higher academic and administrative standards, he increased the quality and breadth of the curriculum and was responsible for the development of the Department of Tactics. A highly disciplined and just leader, he expected the same from cadets and ensured a level playing field for those of varying backgrounds.
