Edward Hill

Lt. Col., U.S. Army

Hill’s regiment, the 16th Michigan Infantry fought in most of the Army of the Potomac’s key battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg. At the Battle of Cold Harbor he would sustain a severe injury when leading the brigade skirmish line in a charge on the enemy’s masked batteries to the muzzles of the guns and be severely wounded. His diary revealed that the surgeon said he would likely die, yet he survived and would be awarded the Medal of Honor.  He was described by fellow officers as efficient, gallant, and moral.
